How to Wash a Leather Jacket

“Can I wash my leather jacket?” Not like regular clothes. Water immersion and detergents strip the natural oils that keep leather flexible. Use this safe method instead for a thorough clean without damage.

Why Machine Washing Is a No-Go

• Soaking swells fibers and causes stiffness/warping.
• Detergents remove protective oils and color.
• Tumble drying cracks the hide.

Safe “Washing” Method (At Home)

1. Dry prep: Shake off dust and wipe using a dry microfiber cloth.
2. Gentle solution: 3–4 drops of mild soap in warm water.
3. Light wipe: Dip cloth, wring thoroughly, wipe panels section by section.
4. Rinse wipe: Fresh damp cloth (water only) to remove soap residue.
5. Air-dry: Hang in a cool room away from sunlight.
6. Condition & buff: Apply leather conditioner, then buff evenly.

Tough Situations

• Salt stains: Wipe with a 1:16 vinegar:water mix; condition after.
• Ink: Don’t rub—contact a professional leather cleaner.
• Rain soak: Blot water, stuff sleeves lightly with paper to keep shape, air-dry naturally.

Care Schedule
